Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a way of giving your support and a gift to The Canadian Hearing Society through a trust agreement. You contribute an asset (bonds, stock securities, mutual funds or real estate) to a trustee (individual or company) who holds and manages the trust.

A Charitable Remainder Trust is a good choice when you have an asset that you would like eventually to give to CHS, but in the meantime you want the income it now generates to support you and, in the future, your spouse.

Charitable Remainder Trusts are irrevocable gifts; you are usually entitled to a tax receipt for the present value of the residual interest. The receipt amount is based on a number of factors, including present value, fair market value of the property transferred to the trust, appropriate interest or discount rate, and anticipated number of years you will receive income from the trust or the number of years the trust will operate.

Your financial or legal adviser provides this calculation.  The trust can provide you with a lifetime income. A tax receipt is issued upon transferring assets to a trust that names CHS as the capital beneficiary.

Benefits to you:

  • Continued support to CHS services and programs
  • Lifetime income  for you or your spouse
  • Reduced investment decision responsibilities
  • Protection of your privacy
  • If desired, your gift can be honoured during your lifetime
  • No probate fees and other Estate costs
  • You avoid Will challenges. Trust assets are not considered part of your Estate
  • The trust remains your asset until death, at which point CHS will receive the “remainder” of the property in the trust
  • Beneficial treatment of capital gains

A Charitable Remainder Trust can provide flexibility when planning your Estate, allowing you to meet your obligations to loved ones while enabling you to leave a legacy to The Canadian Hearing Society.
