THE NIAGARA AREA OFFICE IS PLEASED TO OFFER:

The Hearing Care Counselling Program

The Canadian Hearing Society designed the Hearing Care Counselling Program to help Seniors who have a permanent hearing loss remain independent, active, and in communication at home or outside of home among family, friends, and peers.

What can the Hearing Care Counselling Program do for you?

A Hearing Care Counsellor can:

  • Visit you and your family in your home to explain how CHS can help.
  • Provide information and counselling to you and your family on issues related to hearing loss.
  • Teach individuals and family members communication strategies, including speechreading, that can make communication easier.
  • Provide an orientation on how to use your hearing aids.
  • Provide information and training on the use of communication devices that amplify and alert you to sound, e.g. phone ringing, doorbell, alarm clock.
  • Educate professionals and others who work with seniors about hearing loss.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:

Priority is given to individuals age 55 and older living within the Niagara Region who have a permanent hearing loss.

Hearing Help Classes

Hearing Help Classes offer a supportive group environment designed to help participants learn more about hearing loss, hearing aids, technical devices, and communication strategies - including speechreading.

Hearing Help Class size ranges from 8 to 10 people including hard of hearing persons and their significant others.

GENERAL SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM

We provide personal counselling to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people who require support and encouragement through difficult times and experiences.

For those who need a more in-depth approach, such as therapy, the counsellor will work with other resources in the community to arrange the appropriate services for the client.

We provide social services assistance and referrals for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing consumers with the goal of maintaining their independence in the community.

ONTARIO INTERPRETING SERVICES

Ontario Interpreting Services (OIS) provides professional sign language interpreting services in the following settings: medical, legal, employment, social services, personal business, government ministries & agencies, education related business.  Sign language interpreters can be used in individual discussions, group meetings or for conferences.

Professional sign language interpreters are knowledgeable in the language and culture of both Deaf and hearing people.  They provide communication in both ASL and spoken English.  Sign language interpreters are bound by their professional Code of Ethics.

Communication DEVICES

Providing deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals with a wide range of technical devices available for their day to day lives.  These devices can be used throughout the community to help agencies, organizations and businesses become more accessible to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people in the community.  Visit our online store.

INFORMATION SERVICES

Raising consumer and public awareness of issues related to deafness and hearing loss.

Providing information to government and to the public in support of projects that promote the rights of deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals.  Developing information resources to meet consumer needs.

Community Development Program

The Canadian Hearing Society is committed to advocating for and meeting the needs of deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing people. Our Community Development Program aims to build new strong alliances in the Niagara Region to respond to our consumers' needs through the expansion of services and programs.

Sign Language Services

We offer sign language classes at our Hamilton office!

Using the Signing Naturally curriculum, this program takes people who have no knowledge of sign language to the point where they can function comfortably in a wide variety of situations in the Deaf community. Each class level is a total of thirty hours, generally provided on a weekly basis.
