The Canadian Hearing Society Peel Regional office will no longer be providing Employment Services under the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) as of March 31, 2007. For Employment Services in this region, please contact Ontario Disability Support Program at: General Support Services We provide personal counselling and guidance with daily living activities, eg., housing, financial matters with the goal of maintaining client independence in the community. Hearing Care Counselling This program provides communication and hearing care support services to enable people with acquired hearing loss to carry out daily living activities independently, safely and with reduced communication difficulties. Priority given to people 55 years and older. We also provide assessment, training and support for communication improvement to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals with speech and language difficulties (perception and expression). INTERPRETING SERVICES Ontario Interpreting Services Providing a booking service to access highly qualified American Sign Language(ASL) interpreters. Interpreters are recognized and screened by Ontario Interpreting Services and include both staff interpreters and freelance interpreters. If you need after-hours emergency interpreting, please visit After-Hours Emergency Interpreting Services (Link - http://www.chs.ca/services/afterhour/afterhour.html) EDUCATION Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)![]() This program is defined as Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and is for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing newcomers, 18 years of age and over. Training in literacy and life skills for these individuals with limited English or American Sign Language (ASL) is provided in these free classes. Who is eligible for LINC classes? Adults, permanent residents of Canada and persons allowed to remain in Canada. These include:
Sign Language Services We teach American Sign Language (ASL) classes and train Sign Language instructors. ASL classes are offered at a variety of levels in the fall, winter and spring for a duration of 10 or 11 weeks. Periodically, during the summer months, we operate immersion classes. All of our ASL classes are taught by fully trained Deaf teachers. Sign Language Classes Schedule Access Awareness Presentations We provide access awareness workshops to organizations about hiring deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals. Contact our office at office@peel.chs.ca for more information. COMMUNICATION DEVICES CHS provides communication support, device displays and demonstrations, loaner services and device ordering. We can offer qualified advice, make referrals and sell related accessories such as batteries for hearing aids and TTY paper. We can come out to your organization and provide you an accessibility audit to become more accessible to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing individuals. WILLIAM McGOVERN LIBRARY The William McGovern Library provides information and resources about issues relating to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people, hearing loss and its prevention. The library participates in community events to promote CHS, its mandate and to improve public awareness. We also sell materials such as videos and merchandise. |
