The Canadian Hearing Society Counsellors are specially trained to understand the unique needs of Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people. Direct services include counselling, special assistance with forms, applications and phone calls, help with devices and advocacy.
As part of our counselling services, The Canadian Hearing Society provides job preparation and consultant services to Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people and support employers. We provide assistance to clients with resume preparation and referral to training programs. We provide information concerning ways to communicate on the job and technical devices that allow accessibility.
Provide communication and hearing care support services to enable people with acquired hearing loss to carry out daily living activities independently, safely and with reduced communications difficulties. Priority is given to people aged 55 years and older.
OIS is a program that provides American Sign Language - English Language Interpreting services to Deaf and hearing individuals. Interpreting services are provided for such essential services as Legal, Medical, Counselling, Mental Health, Employment and Business related matters. Educational interpreting may be provided on a contract basis where possible. OIS Interpreters are required to have professional training and pass a competency test to ensure fluency. They adhere to a code of ethics ensuring accuracy, confidentiality and impartiality. We offer French Sign Language - LSQ.
There are many devices available to assist Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people in their day to day living. The Canadian Hearing Society has demonstration devices on display and for sale.
NLLP is an innovative program designed to provide Deaf adults with an opportunity to develop independent living skills and to increase communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and basic English. The program staff assess language and life skills needs prior to entry into the program. The curriculum also includes training in Math and basic computer skills.
DBS is a specialized program providing Intervening services for individuals who have a complete or partial loss of both vision and hearing such that neither of these senses can compensate for the impairment of the other. Intervenors provide clear and accurate communication to Deaf-Blind clients to assist them to participate fully in all aspects of daily and community living while promoting independence.
Intervention is available for a variety of settings, including Medical, Legal, Educational, Social Service and Personal Business
The Sudbury office also maintains a CAP (Community Access Program) site with 4 computers, a scanner and printing capability. This site is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm with technical assistance available, if required. All computers are connected to high speed fiber optic Internet access and all are wheel chair accessible. This site is maintained with assistance from Industry Canada and The Canadian Hearing Society.
