Hearing Aid Program

The Kenora(office@kenora.chs.ca), Dryden(office@dryden.chs.ca) and Fort Frances (office@fortfrances.chs.ca) offices have a Hearing Aid Program that sells hearing aids and counsels those who have lost their hearing regarding hearing aids and their use. Information concerning assistive devices is also provided as well as battery sales and repairs to hearing aids. Loaner aids are provided while aids are being repaired.

Mental Health and Wellness Program

Thunder Bay office is proud to annouce the opening of a new Mental Health & Wellness Program. This program services hard of hearing, Deaf, and deafened people by providing therapy/counselling to individuals and their families. This program offers to do the following: assist service providers in acquiring a better understanding of the challenges encountered by The Canadian Hearing Society's consumers; facilitate acommodations to ensure that consumers achieve effective and accessible mental health services; increase awareness of substance abuse issues and service availability; screen, assess and provide intervention/treatment to clients with substance abuse issues; collaborate with mainstream mental health agencies and professionals on the provision of mental health therapy/counselling to eligible clients; as well to provide cultural sensitivity training and orientation to mental health agencies and professionals on issues related to mental health and hearing loss.

General Social Services (GSS)

The Canadian Hearing Society Counsellors are specially trained to understand the unique needs of Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people. Direct services include counselling, special assistance with forms, applications and phone calls, help with devices and advocacy.

Employment Services

As part of our counselling services, The Canadian Hearing Society provides job preparation and consultant services to Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people and supports employers. We provide assistance to clients with resume preparation and referral to training programs. We provide information concerning ways to communicate on the job and communication devices that allow accessibility.

Hearing Care Counselling

Provide communication and hearing care support services to enable people with acquired hearing loss to carry out daily living activities independently, safely and with reduced communications difficulties. Priority is given to people aged 55 years and older.

Ontario Interpreting Services (OIS)

OIS is a program that provides American Sign Language - English Language Interpreting services to Deaf and hearing individuals. Interpreting services are provided for such essential services as Legal, Medical, Counselling, Mental Health, Employment and Business related matters. Educational interpreting may be provided on a contract basis where possible. OIS Interpreters are required to have professional training and pass a competency test to ensure fluency. They adhere to a code of ethics ensuring accuracy, confidentiality and impartiality.

Communication Devices Program

There are many devices available to assist Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people in their day to day living. The Canadian Hearing Society has demonstration devices on display and for sale.

Northern Literacy and Life Skills Program (NLLP)

NLLP is an innovative program designed to provide Deaf adults with an opportunity to develop independent living skills and to increase communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and basic English. The program staff assess language and life skills needs prior to entry into the program. The curriculum also includes training in Math and basic computer skills.

Videoconferencing Services

  • We can offer competitive videoconferencing room rentals.
  • CHS Thunder Bay offers a boardroom for its videoconferencing rentals that can accomodate approximately 15 to 20 people.

Bridging & Gateway Services

  • A link between ISDN and IP videoconferencing so you can call anyone in the world.
  • The ability to call up to 11 sites for one meeting (a multi-point call).
